Our Financial Report
The inaugural Karene O’Hare Ovarian Cancer Memorial Race (aka: the Hare and Tortoise New Quarter Park Run/Walk) was held on Saturday, September 12, 2009. The mission is to underwrite the Ovarian Cancer screening, treatment and educational programs offered by the Lackey Clinic and the Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center for their patients. Since 2009 over $146,000 has been donated to underwrite these Ovarian Cancer programs. An Ovarian Cancer Memorial Endowment Fund was established in November 2016 and is a permanent source of funds for the mission. Annually, the Race net income is deposited into the Endowment Fund and invested. As of January 2020, the value of the Endowment Fund had grown to $252,000. The Endowment Fund enables us to achieve ongoing financial sustainability in our continuing donation efforts to help build, strengthen and support the significant Ovarian Cancer health care that the Lackey Clinic and the Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center provide for our community.
Ovarian Cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers and the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among American women. About one in 58 American women will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetimes and approximately 15,000 of them will die from the disease in the year 2020. The disease is very difficult to diagnose. The symptoms are subtle and easily confused with other conditions. Unfortunately little progress over the last 30 years has been made in developing a reliable test. The over-all 5-year survival rate of women diagnosed with the disease is approximately 46%, versus 89% for women diagnosed with breast cancer and 72% for women diagnosed with cervical cancer. We are hopeful that after reading about Ovarian Cancer you will agree there is a critical need to educate women on its warning symptoms. An important
element of our mission is to ensure women receive the facts to become pro-active in their health care needs. This issue is critical and unfortunately little education is occurring and insufficient attention is being given to discovering a reliable test for early detection of this terrible disease.
We cannot succeed with our mission without the support of our many donors, sponsors and entrants. Please join us by entering the walk/run, making a donation, and/or becoming a sponsor.
